Assemblies of God Ghana Backs National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving

The Assemblies of God Ghana, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Stephen Y. Wengam, has thrown its full weight behind the upcoming National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving scheduled for July 1st. Speaking in support of the initiative, Rev. Wengam emphasized the vital role that prayer has played in maintaining Ghana’s peace, stability, and democratic growth over the years.

“You don’t need a prophet or a third eye to know that this country is deeply loved and blessed by God,” Rev. Wengam noted. “Whenever the religious bodies rally to pray—especially before elections—it has contributed significantly to the peace and strength of our democracy.”

Rev. Wengam commended the government, especially His Excellency the President, for delivering on the promise to institute a dedicated national prayer day. He described it as “long overdue, but better late than never,” adding that such a move will further enhance religious unity in Ghana.

He also expressed strong support for the appointment of Hon. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah as Chairperson of the Prayer Day Organizing Committee, praising his spiritual commitment and long-standing service to the nation.

“He is a man who has served Ghana selflessly. When it comes to the spiritual well-being of the nation, he gives his all,” Rev. Wengam added.

Assemblies of God Ghana has committed to participating fully in the national event. Rev. Wengam revealed that all churches under the denomination across every region and district in Ghana have been instructed to participate actively. Official directives will be sent out to encourage full involvement.

However, Rev. Wengam offered a thoughtful observation, cautioning against turning the event into a talk-heavy ceremony.

“Many people attend because they want to pray. But often, it becomes a series of speeches. Let prayer dominate. Let the people pour their hearts out to God,” he advised. “People come with a burden to intercede. Let’s not silence their prayers with endless speeches.”

Rev. Wengam urged organizers to keep sermons brief and to-the-point, allowing ample time for true congregational prayer, where the average Ghanaian can cry out to God for the nation’s wellbeing.

The Assemblies of God Ghana’s full endorsement of this initiative underscores the church’s commitment to the spiritual direction of the nation and the power of united intercession.
